UWTSD MSc provides a pathway to professional registration for digital transformation leaders in health and care
Graduates of the MSc Digital Transformation for the Health and Care Professions at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) can now use their qualification as evidence when applying for professional registration at Advanced Practitioner level with the Federation for Informatics Professionals in Health and Social Care (FEDIP).
Developed by UWTSD in collaboration with the Wales Institute of Digital
Information (WIDI) and Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW), the MSc has already supported professionals from across the NHS and social care to apply evidence-based digital transformation in their workplaces. This new recognition means the programme now not only builds skills but also provides graduates with a direct route to demonstrate those skills against national professional standards.
Why professional registration matters
Professional registration ensures digital health and care leaders are recognised in the same structured way as established professions such as medicine, nursing, or accountancy. By submitting their MSc certificate as part of the application process, graduates can demonstrate that their learning and competencies meet the requirements for Advanced Practitioner status with FEDIP.
For professionals, this recognition offers parity of esteem, supports career progression, and demonstrates accountability to both their employers and the public. For organisations, it provides confidence that digital leaders are meeting agreed standards and are committed to ongoing professional development, helping to ensure digital transformation is delivered safely, effectively, and sustainably.
Professor Philip Scott, Programme Director at UWTSD, said: “We’re delighted that our graduates are now recognised as demonstrating the competence of an Advanced Practitioner in digital health and care. This complements our existing accreditation by the European Federation of Medical Informatics, that the MSc provides the right subject knowledge at the right level.” Andrew Griffiths, CEO of FEDIP, said: “We are pleased to confirm that the UWTSD MSc provides appropriate evidence for Advanced Practitioner registration. The programme equips digital leaders with the competencies and values required to deliver safe, effective, and innovative services, and professional registration allows them to demonstrate this with confidence and credibility.” Partnership for impact
The MSc is part of Wales’ drive to grow a digitally skilled workforce, supporting the ambitions set out in A Healthier Wales and the national Workforce Strategy for Health and Social Care in Wales 2020–2030. Both highlight the importance of innovation, continuous improvement, and equipping staff with the skills to embrace digital technologies that improve care and empower citizens.
Developed in Wales in response to national workforce ambitions, the MSc also addresses digital transformation challenges that are shared across health and care systems in England and internationally, making it relevant and valuable to students from a wide range of contexts.
About the MSc Digital Transformation for the Health and Care Professions
The part-time, three-year MSc combines online learning with an annual in-person residential event, allowing working professionals to balance study with their roles in health and social care. Students develop leadership, strategy, and digital skills in a patient-centred context, while also exploring international approaches to digital health.
Graduates come from diverse areas of health and social care, including paediatrics, pharmacy, social care, therapy services, and hospital management, and have already contributed to service improvements across Wales.
